The last operation in Libya illustrated the multiple roles of the frigates in a military force with a naval
component.
From intelligence gathering to naval fire support through the control of a no-fly zone or maritime
embargo, the protection of the aircraft and helicopter carriers or the fight against the mining of ports, the
frigates have continuously adapted and contributed to the enemy’s defeat.
To better understand the issues of the French navy
Before the outbreak of hostilities, several frigates had
been dispatched off the Libyan coast, outside territorial
waters.
Together with other measures, they contributed to
allow France to follow the evolution of fighting between
the troops of Colonel Gaddafi and insurgents and prepare
for possible action by assessing the capacity of the
incumbent’s forces.
