The ballroom was silent and attentive as the founder of ESPN encouraged a packed house
to always follow their dreams and never give up on a good idea.
“Whatever idea it is you have, don’t let the dream die because you can do it, especially
with all the opportunities we have here in the United States of America,” said Rasmussen, the
founder and first president of ESPN.
Hosted by the University Program Council, Rasmussen visited Auburn University on
Tuesday to tell students, faculty and community members that even if all the odds seem against
you, anything is possible.
Rasmussen himself thought all the odds were against him when he was fired from his job
as a communications director for the New England Whalers.
That was Memorial Day weekend in
1978 and not even a year later he was all set up to launch ESPN, the Worldwide Leader in
Sports.
